Karen Shearer graduated from San Diego State University and began her career as a publicist for Capitol Records before moving to the Westwood One Radio Network circa 1980, where for the next decade she worked as a producer for Special Edition, a weekly program featuring the music of popular black recording artists. During this period she also produced rock and country music programs for the Westwood One Radio Network. Shearer eventually left radio and the music business to produce wildlife programs for television.
