Patricia A. Thiel, a native of Adrian, Minnesota, received her B.A.(1975) from Macalester College and a Ph. D (1981) from the California Institute of Technology in Chemistry. She has been employed as an Associate Scientist at Control Data Corporation (1975-1976); Technical staff member at Sandia National Laboratory (1981-1983); Post-doctoral research associate at the University of California at Berkeley (1983): Technical staff at Thermeonics Labs (1983); and Assistant Professor (1983-1988); Associate Professor (1988-1991); and Full Professor (1991- ) of Chemistry at Iowa State University.
Thiel is also currently serving as the Program Director for Materials Science at the Ames Laboratory. She has received numerous fellowships, including the Young Presidential Investigator; Henry Dreyfus Fellowship; the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship; and the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship. She has published numerous professional articles and is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Vacuum Association, and the Materials Research Society.
