Margaret Wood Hagan grew up in Christiansburg, Va., and studied at Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C., the New York School of Social Work and Columbia University School of Journalism. She began her career as a psychiatric social worker and then worked for the American National Red Cross for 33 years, serving as field director for the Red Cross at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington D.C., and as national director of hospital service.
