With over one hundred picture book illustration credits as well as a number of self-illustrated books, author-illustrator is one of our most gifted artists acording to Booklist's Hazel Rochman. Lewin served in the U.S. Army (1958) before becoming a professional wrestler (1952-1965) and then an artist and freelance illustrator (1956—). Lewin has also conducted one-man shows in the Laboratory of Ornithology, Cornell University (1978) and Central Park Zoo Gallery, as well as a group show at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden .

Ted Lewin was born May 6, 1935, in Buffalo, New York. He earned a B.F.A. from the Pratt Institute of Art in New York City, in 1956. Lewin was a professional wrestler from 1952 to 1965, and during this time began his career as an artist and freelance illustrator. Lewin is married to author-illustrator Betsy Reilly Lewin, another Pratt Institute alumnus; the two have collaborated on several books. Lewin, whose work includes over 100 published, cites nature as one of his inspirations. He also draws inspiration from his travels, working from photographs to create vivid and realistic illustrations. Lewin is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Caldecott Honor for Elisa Bartone's 1993 book, Peppe the Lamplighter .
