Arthur E. Brainerd (1885-1974), a geologist, was a professor and head of the geology department at Syracuse University before joining the geology department of Empire Gas and Fuel Company. In the early 1920s, he was a field geologist for Marland Oil Company. After Marland merged with Continental Oil Company (Conoco), Brainerd was named Regional Geologist for the Rocky Mountain area. He retired from Continental Oil in 1950. Brainerd helped organize the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists in 1924 and was its president in 1933. He was also active on many committees of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
