American politician and U.S. Federal judge; b. in Duxbury, Mass.; graduated from Harvard, 1812; studied law in Litchfield, Conn.; admitted to the bar in 1815, moved to Hallowell, Me., and practiced in Maine; served in Maine House of Representatives, 1821-1822. In 1823 elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Maine's 4th Congressional District (1824-1829), then to the U.S. Senate (1829-1835). In 1835 resigned from the Senate and practiced law in Boston from 1836-1841. In 1840 he was a presidential elector for the Whig party. In 1841 he became a judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Due to failing eyesight, retired from the bench in 1865. Sprague married Sarah Deming in 1818 and they had four children. He died in Boston in 1880.
