Born at Centerville, S.D., son of Rev. A.M. West. The family moved to Glen Ullin, N.D. in 1914. He taught school in Wells County, N.D. after serving in the Navy during World War I. After graduation from the University of Minnesota, he began a career in etching. Using the name Ivan Dmitri, he launched a second career in art photography. Married Louise Remington in 1943.
