Watts, Robert Austin, 1922-1951.
Watts was indicted for first degree murder in the shotgun slaying of Mary Lois Burney by the Marion County (Ind.) grand jury in November 1947. After several trials and stays of execution, in June 1949 the Supreme Court ordered a new trial on the grounds that African-Americans had been excluded from the grand jury and that Watts had been illegally coerced into a confession. He was again found guilty, had another stay of execution, and was finally executed in January 1951.
