Frances Lewine was born January 20, 1921, to parents Ralph and Pearl Lewine in New York City, New York. Lewine attended Hunter College, where she edited the college newspaper. After graduation, she became a reporter for the Plainfield, New Jersey Courier-News.
Later, Lewine reported for the Newark bureau of the Associated Press (AP) before moving to Washington in 1956 to work for the Associated Press White House press corps. Lewine was the first, full-time female to cover the White House for the Associated Press. Throughout her career, Lewine fought for equal treatment for women in journalism.
During her time working for the White House Press Corps, Lewine reported under Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford. Lewine left the Associated Press in 1977 to serve in the Carter administration as Deputy Director of Public Affairs for the Department of Transportation. After the Carter administration ended, in 1981, Lewine began working for Cable News Network (CNN) as an assignment editor and field producer. Lewine held this position until her death.
Frances Lewine died on January 19, 2008, in Washington, DC.
