Mary Langdon was the daughter of Alfred Langdon (b. 1872, d. 1945). The papers were discovered by her daughters among a bundle of letters written by Alfred Langdon to his mother, Mary, when he was a ship's purser on the Canadian-Australian Steamship Line between 1897 and 1899. Mary Langdon's husband, John Langdon, worked as a solicitor's clerk and died of consumption in the 1870s. Alfred Langdon had two siblings - an older brother who was a sailor and drowned when his ship went down off India in the 1870s; and an older sister who also came to Australia who married into the Diggles family after arrival.
