Hazel Lockwood Muller was born on July 7, 1890. She began working at the American Museum of Natural History in 1922. In 1939 Muller initiated dance recitals in the Indian Hall and in 1942 began holding formal concerts in the Museum's auditorium. In 1945 her title became Supervisor of Dance and Lecture Programs.

The series Hazel Muller produced was called “Around the World with Dance and Song.” It was officially held between 1943 and 1952, and consisted of approximately 14 concerts a year by individual artists and groups from different parts of the world. In total, 123 performances were attended by about 160,000 people. The purpose of the series was to add a living dimension to static Museum exhibits, contribute to international appreciation and good will, as well as to educate audiences and help dancers find employment.

Muller wrote radio scripts for the radio program “Dance Horizons”, which was based on this series and were aired in the mid-nineteen-forties by WNYC, New York. As a result of Muller's efforts, “Around the World With Dance and Song” won a large and constant audience for dance at the Museum of Natural History.
