Hide Profile

Charles J. Keim (1922-1999) was born and raised in Montana. After service in New Guinea during World War II and a two-year convalescent stay in an Army hospital, he returned to school. He graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in journalism in 1948 and an MA in history in 1950. After writing for the Port Angeles News and freelancing for several years, Keim was invited in 1954 to join the faculty at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks as professor of journalism and English while also filling the newly created position of director of information. He remained with the university for the next 23 years, during which he served as head of the Department of Creative Writing and Journalism and then as Dean of the College of Arts and Letters. He was also registered as a big game guide in Alaska. His many publications, both books and articles, reflect his varied Alaskan experiences and connections. He died in Fox Island, Washington, in 1999.

Betty Joyce Keim, wife of Charles J. Keim, played many roles throughout her life, including stints as a model and as a consultant in interior design. She was instrumental in organizing, with ROTC assistance, the women's rifle team at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.
