Lillard was born on June 3, 1909 in Los Angeles, California; attended Sacramento Junior College; BA, Stanford University, 1930; MA, University of Montana, 1931; graduate student, Harvard University, 1934-35; Ph.D, University of Iowa, 1943; high school teacher in Wyoming and California, 1931-33; instructor in English, Los Angeles City College, 1933-34 and 1935-42; instructor (1943-45) and assistant professor (1945-47), Indiana University; assistant professor of English, UCLA, 1947-49; faculty member (1949-65), associate professor of English (1962-65), Los Angeles City College; professor of English and American studies, California State University, Los Angeles, beginning in 1965; won Silver Medal of Commonwealth Club of California in 1948 for The great forest (1947); other publications include Desert challenge: an interpretation of Nevada (1942) and Eden in jeopardy (1966); he passed away on March 19, 1990.
