In 1980, Lutherans celebrated the 450th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession. The Lutheran World Federation's (LWF) Institute for Ecumenical Research at Strasbourg, France orchestrated an international study project focused on the status and function of the Augsburg Confession in Lutheran churches throughout the world. LWM's Office on Studies and LCUSA's Division of Theological Studies participated as the U.S. segment of the program. Established in 1977 as the successor body of the U.S.A. National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation (USANC), LWM was a joint agency of the Lutheran Church in America, The American Lutheran.

Church, and the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches. In 1977, LWM was terminated with the establishment of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
