Glenn L. Martin Company
Variant namesThe Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company incorporated in Cleveland, Ohio in 1917 and remained until 1929, when Martin moved the company to Essex, Maryland. In the summer of 1918, the Glenn L. Martin Company built the first locally-made plane at its St. Clair Avenue plant. The Glenn L. Martin Company developed the Martin MB Bomber. Completed too late for use in World War I, the plane was used in the Army's postwar air force. The Navy also bought aircraft from G.L. Martin. Martin built mail planes and passenger planes based on the model of the MB Bomber. Glenn L. Martin decided to move his plant to Essex, Maryland, when the city of Cleveland refused to give Martin additional land to extend the manufacturing plant and landing field. The Great Lakes Aircraft Corporation took over the Martin plant, but went out of business by 1935.
