The Research Committee of North Carolina State College (later University) was established to insure that uniform principles, regulations, and procedures in relation to research activities be prescribed. The University Research Committee advises the Vice Chancellor's office regarding faculty research interests as well as encouraging research, helping to develop policies and procedures, informing faculty regarding support, and making recommendations regarding funding.

The administration of faculty awards for research has expanded throughout the history of committee. Currently (2011) the program provides services to facilitate the submission of proposals, negotiation of agreements, and the administration of internally and externally funded projects. All administrative bodies that oversee grants and contracts seek guidance from this committee. External sponsors include federal, state, local governments and private enterprise. These sponsors provide funding through grants, cooperative agreements or contracts.
