Jennie Chinn Morton was born in Franklin County, Kentucky in 1838. Soon widowed after her marriage to John C. Morton of Hartford, Kentucky in 1860, she turned her time and attention to literary pursuits. Morton was a member of the Lyceum, a Frankfort literary society which was the progenitor of the revived Kentucky State Historical Society (now the Kentucky Historical Society). She served as Secretary-Treasurer and Regent of the Society and was the founder and original editor of the Society's journal, REGISTER OF THE KENTUCKY STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY. She held these positions with the Society until her death in 1920.
