Per note with collection: During 1866-72, Greenleaf Austin Goodale served with the 23rd Infantry at Fort Vancouver, Washington, Fort Klamath, Oregon and other locations, recording his experiences on the Pacific Northwest frontier. In 1870 he married and in 1872 he moved with his family and regiment to Arizona.

Greenleaf A. Goodale and George S. Goodale were a father and son who both served in the United States (U.S.) 23rd Infantry Regiment. Both men attained the rank of colonel before retiring from military service.
