Taft was superintendent and agent for the Whitin Machine Works, textile machinery manufacturers in Whitinsville, Mass., 1864-1888. He also served on the Board of Directors, 1870-1887. He is credited with implementing changes to almost the whole Whitin line of products through modification, adaptation, and experimentation. His inventions received several patents; he also supervised all apprentices in the machine shop under an apprenticeship training program.
