Turner, Lorenzo Dow
Variant namesAfrican American linguist. A graduate of both Howard and Harvard Universities, Lorenzo Dow Turner (1895-1972) taught English as well as courses about African cultures at Roosevelt University until he retired at the age of 70. Turner's best known studies pertain to the Gullah language and culture of the Georgia and South Carolina Sea Islands. Turner also studied West African languages and Yoruba influences in Brazil. His books include "The Krio Language of Sierra Leone" (1963), and "Africanisms in the Gullah Dialect" (1949).
