Born in 1950 in Nassawadox, Virginia, African-American journalist Wilmer Ames was best known as the founder and editor-in-chief of "Emerge," (1989-2000), a monthly newsmagazine which addressed social, political and economic issues from a black perspective. Before he founded "Emerge," Ames worked as a reporter for a number of publications including "Time," "Sports Illustrated," and freelanced for "People," and "GQ" magazines during the 1970s and 1980s. "Emerge" targeted upwardly mobile blacks and covered popular news stories of the day, as well as in-depth portraits of leading figures in the 1990s including Louis Farrakhan, Jesse Jackson, and Clarence Thomas.
