The society formed in 1821
"feeling the importance of a more extensive knowledge of missions to enable us to ascertain our duty and prepare ourselves to promote the Redeemer's kingdom..." The regular meetings include prayer, singing, and literary exercises on such questions as "Should the majority of young men who enter the ministry remain at home or go abroad as foreign Missionaries?" The Society of Inquiry merged with the Theological Society in 1869, taking the name Theological and Missionary Society.
