The Faculty Club was organized as the Men's Faculty Club on 18 February 1939 as a result of the findings of two committees appointed in 1932 and 1939 by Dean of Administration Robert B. House. The club was envisioned as a descendant of the social organization of the same name which was active during the presidency of Edward Kidder Graham. The voluntary association was controlled by an elective Board of Governors, which appointed the club's officers. Membership was open to all university faculty and staff. Women were admitted as associate members until 1954, when the club's constitution was amended to provide for equality of membership. At its monthly luncheon meetings, the club was addressed by speakers on topics of faculty interest. In April 1981, the club disbanded for one year by action of its Board of Governors due to declining membership and faculty disinterest. For two years thereafter the club met informally without rules and dues. The club was reactivated in the fall of 1986.
