Albert N. Ames was born October 15, 1838 in Oswego, New York. Albert's father, Cheney Ames, was prominent in politics and government of Oswego, and served in the New York State Senate, 1864-1865. Albert worked at a local factory and trained in a militia group in late 1860 through the summer of 1861, when he enlisted in the 1st New York Light Artillery Regiment being organized in part by his cousin Nelson Ames. Albert Ames would rise in rank to 1st Lieutenant. He died in action on September 27, 1864.
