William Beebe (1877-1962) was among the earliest of the curatorial staff of the Bronx Zoo, joining the Zoological Park in 1899 as Assistant Curator of Birds. He was Curator of Birds, 1902-1918, Honorary Curator of Birds, 1919-1962, and founding director of the Department of Tropical Research.
