Third-generation owner and operator of Maplehearst Farm, a livestock operation near Cedar Falls, Iowa. He is or has been a member of the Foreign Policy committee of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States, the Black Hawk County Board of Education, the Cedar Falls Rotary Club, and many local, state, and national governmental agencies. He has been associated with the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, the Producer's Commission Association of Chicago, the National Farm Institute, and the Farm Policy Council, among many other groups. Hearst was a member of the 1947 Iowa Farm Bureau Federation's trip to study conditions in post war Europe, and was later invited to testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee which was studying the Marshall Plan. In 1955, he was chosen to be a member of the American Agricultural Delegation to the USSR. This mission was part of an exchange program begun in that year, and was largely responsible for the beginning of the post war thaw in the U.S.-Soviet relations.
