White III, 1936- , BA, 1957, Brown University; MD, 1961, Stanford University; PhD, 1970, Karolinska Institute, orthopedic surgeon, was named Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 1978, and was Ellen and Melvin Gordon Professor of Medical Education at Harvard Medical School in 2001. White served as Orthopedic Surgeon-in-Chief at Beth Israel Hospital (later Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center) in Boston, Mass. from 1978 to 1991, and directed the Daniel E. Hogan Spine Fellowship Program at Beth Israel Hospital from 1983 to 2003. White's research focused on biomechanics of the spine, fracture healing, and the surgical and non-surgical care of the spine.
