Born 14 Dec. 1843 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Served with 74th New York Volunteers during the Civil War and later, with the New York State National Guard. President of the Jewett Regfrigerator Company. Served as mayor of Buffalo from 1894-1898, and as chairman of the military committee of the Home Defense Committee of Erie County during World War I. The Home Defense Committee was organized to replace the national guard units called to federal service. The first company was enrolled on 8 June 1917. On 21 Oct. 1917, a regiment of four battalions held its first public review at the 74th Regiment armory.
