Born in Tennessee; enlisted in U.S. Army, Dec. 24, 1898 in Leavenworth, Kansas; served in Company C, 20th Infantry Regiment; saw action in Cuba; returned to Tennessee by 1908; married wife Fielding in 1911; had at least three sons, Earl, William Alfred, and Andrew L. Nichols.
