German Protestant Bible critic and professor at various German universities. The focus of his work was the prophets, especially Jeremiah and Ezekiel, but his most famous work is Introduction to the canonical books of the Old Testament, published in English in 1907. It was the first important critical introduction to the Bible based on the approach of J. Wellhausen and K.H. Graf.
