Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 is the federal law that bans sex discrimination in schools, whether it is in academics or athletics. Title IX states, "No Person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." In November 1975, acting Chancellor J. A. Rigney of North Carolina State University appointed a committee to advise on implementation of Title IX at NC State.
