Dr. Lucius Merrill was born in 1857 in Orono. He attended the University of Maine and graduated in the class of 1883. From 1885-1887, he worked as assistant curator, Department of Lithology and Physical Geography at the U.S. National Museum. He joined the UMaine Experiment Station in 1887 as an analytical chemist. He was an analytical chemist until 1896 but was associated with the Experiment Station until 1930. In 1888, Lucius Merrill was appointed instructor of Biological Chemistry in the College of Agriculture. He was later Professor of Biological Chemistry and later Agricultural Chemistry. Twords the end of his career, he was a Professor of Geology and Economic Geology. In 1908, he was awarded a Doctorate of Science from the University of Maine. In 1929, Dr. Merrill was appointed State Geologist . He retired Emeritus from UMaine in 1931 and died in 1935. He was brother to George Perkins Merrill (which see).
Edward Osgood Merrill was born in 1916, the son of Lucius Merrill. Hr graduated in 1938 from the University of Maine in Chemistry. He was a Professor of Biochemistry of the Agricultural Experiment Station until he retired in 1979. He died in 1987.
