Franklin Mjaatvedt was born in Norway in 1916. Although he was not yet a U.S. citizen, he had completed two years of high school and was working as a hotel clerk when he enlisted in the Army in Salt Lake City, Utah on April 4, 1943. Mjaatvedt joined the 10th Mountain Division while it was engaged in mountain and winter warfare training at Camp Hale, Colo. he was assigned to the 86th Infantry Regiment, Company A. Later, he served at Camp Swift, Tex. and engaged in combat operations in Italy. During the Po River battle, Mjaatvedt received the Bronze Star Medal.
