Montgomery Hare (1870-1932) was born in Orange, N.J. to J. Montgomery and Mary Meredith Hare. His siblings included Meredith, William, Moris, and Mary. He attended the Groton School in Massachusetts, obtained his bachelor's degree from Yale University, and attended law school at Columbia University. He was admitted to the bar in 1897 and worked as an attorney, involving himself in local and state politics as a Democrat. In 1908 he married Constance Parsons, daughter of well-known attorney John E. Parsons and Mary McIlvaine Parsons. Montgomery and Constance had two sons, Michael Meredith and Montgomery (Jr.).
