Myrtle Robison was born about 1915. When she was four, her parents bought a farm in Gilmore Township (Isabella County, Mich.). At the time, the closest rural school, Schofield, was a mile away, and there were no other houses located between her parents' farm and the school. As a result, her parents waited until she was six to walk to school alone, beginning in the spring of 1921. After attending Schofield School through the eighth grade, Myrtle graduated from Mount Pleasant High School. She attended CMU for two years and earned a five-year state limited teaching certificate. Myrtle then taught at Gulick School for $60/ month with 27 pupils, beginners through 8th grade. Because she did not like the boarding situation, for her second year of teaching Myrtle moved in with her parents and taught at Herring School where she had 50 students, beginners through 8th grade. Myrtle also taught at Walton School. Eventually, she married Edward F. Kalencki, with whom she had a daughter, Wanda. Myrtle was a member of the Apple Blossom Club at CMU in 1935. By attending summer school, she earned a B.S. from CMU in 1945 and, later, a M.Ed. from the University of Michigan. In 2006 Myrtle was retired from teaching.
