The Department of Music was founded in 1965, under the Division of Fine Arts. The program provided training in performance, music theory, and music history. Initially the program offered only a Bachelor of Arts degree, but in 1969, the Division of Fine Arts began to offer a Master of Fine Arts degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in music. This degree was changed in 1970, to a Master of Fine Arts in Music.
