Republic of Texas pioneer, and Texas Ranger. Born October 20, 1820 near Jefferson City, Missouri. Came with his family at age nine to Texas and settled in the DeWitt Colony near Gonzales. During the Republic decade served with Captain Mathew Caldwell's Texas Ranger unit and took part in the Battle of Plum Creek (1840) and the Battle of Salado in (1842). In January, 1895, while living at Moulton, Texas, he dictated a memoir of those early days to his son-in-law, who wrote them down.
