The office of surveyor-general was re-opened at the second meeting of the Board of Proprietors of East Jersey in June 1782, and in 1784 the office was established in Perth Amboy. John Rutherfurd was appointed as the Surveyor General. One of the Board's accomplishments was the liquidation in 1788-1790 of the Ramapo tract -- the lands located in the northern parts of the present Bergen and Passaic counties that the proprietors acquired in common ca. 1750.
