Chadwick Otis Burns was born in Louisville, Kentucky on November 30, 1929, the fourth child of Otis and Viola Burns. He attended Frankfort High School, where he was a member of the football team. At the age of seventeen, he enlisted with the National Guard. On July 26, 1948, he left the Nation Guard and enlisted with the United States Marine Corps. In November 1948, Burns was one of several soldiers chosen to participate in a live radio broadcast on ABC. In late July 1950, Burns and the rest of the First Marine Division of the USMC were sent to fight in Korea. Burns died during the fight for Chin-Dong Ni Hill on August 8, 1950, a few days after his arrival in the country. He received a temporary burial at the U.S. Army Cemetery at Masan, Korea. His remains were returned home a year later and buried at the Frankfort Cemetery on July 11, 1951.
