Resident of Madison, Wis.; Union officer; enlisted in Nov. 1862 as a second lieutenant in the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry, Company B and aide de camp to Brig. Gen. Thomas H. Ruger; resigned his commission on 28 July 1863 as a result of hearing loss; received an honorable discharge on 30 July 1863; all of the letters in the collection are addressed to Augusta "Gussie" R. Scott, Ripon, Wis., student (1862-1863) and assistant teacher (1863-1864) at Rockford Female Seminary, Rockford, Ill.
