Frank J. Steinhardt was born in Austria in 1909. He had completed two years of college, but was not yet a citizen of the United States when he enlisted in the Army on May 22, 1942 at Milwaukee, Wis. He was still single, and working as a sports instructor. Steinhardt joined the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Lewis, Wash., where he was assigned to the 87th Mountain Infantry regiment. Although Steinhardt participated in the invasion and occupation of Kiska Island, Alaska, he transferred out of the 10th Mountain Division prior to its deployment to Italy.
