In April 1905, the General Faculty of Oberlin College voted to establish a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The Zeta Chapter of Ohio, the sixth chapter in the state, was formally inaugurated on November 8, 1907. There were thirteen founding members, including President of the college Henry Churchill King (1858-1934) and twelve faculty members who were already members of chapters at their undergraduate institutions. By-Laws adopted in 1907 established four officers: chapter President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Executive Committee met annually to elect members; it now meets biannually for the purpose. The Nominating Committee meets to elect chapter officers and non-student members of Phi Beta Kappa. The daily business of the chapter, including directing elections, corresponding with the United Chapters, and planning the annual banquets, is conducted by the Secretary-Treasurer, who serves a two-year term.
