The Benjamin Hayes papers are but a small fraction of the enormous collection of Californiana made by Judge Benjamin Hayes. For twenty-five years, beginning in 1849 with his own journal of a trip across the plains, Hayes gathered up everything he could find that might eventually be useful to him in writing a history of southern California. By 1874 he recognized that his advanced age and poor health would make it impossible to carry out his plan, and he transferred all of his materials to the Bancroft Library. However, he continued his diligent search for historical data, and at the time of his death in 1877 he was actively engaged in transcribing documents from the archives of Los Angeles.
