Reverend John Stanford, the son of William and Mary Stanford, was born in Wandsworth, England on October 20, 1754. He was ordained in England in 1781 and moved to the United States five years later. In the United States, he worked as a pastor in the First Baptist Church of Providence, Rhode Island, as a pastor for a New York City congregation, as an itinerant preacher, and as chaplain to the New York State Prison. Mrs. Anne Hart, who wrote the letters in this collection, was the widowed wife of Reverend Oliver Hart (d.ca. 1804) of Hopewell, New Jersey.
