Member of the Film and Photo League, New York, 1932-35, 1936-41. Part-time Instructor in Photography, Trenton College, New Jersey, 1950; Instructor in Photography, with Harry Callahan, Black Mountain College, Beria, North Carolina, 1951; Professor of Photography, 1951-71, and Head of the Department of Photography, Institute of Design, 1961-71, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. Adjunct Professor, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, 1971; Visiting Lecturer, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1973. Co-Editor, Choice poetry and photography magazine, Chicago, 1961-70. Founder Member, Society for Photographic Education, 1963; Trustee, Gallery of Contemporary Art, Chicago, 1964. Recipient: Guggenheim Fellowship, 1966; Distinguished Career in Photography Award, Friends of Photography, Carmel, California, 1981; Photography Award, St. Botolph Club Foundation, Boston, 1982; Governor's Arts Award, Rhode Island State Council of the Arts, 1983.
