Reino Makela (1915-1977) was born in Ishpeming, Mich., the son of immigrant parents. In 1931, the entire family migrated to Karelia in the Soviet Union, where Reino married and worked most of his life as a lumberjack. Several family members, including Reino's youngest brother and his father-in-law were imprisoned during the Fenno-Russian conflict of 1939-1940.
