Dr John Thompson is an historian and writer with a particular interest in Australian cultural and intellectual history. He began his career in the State Library of Victoria and later joined the National Library of Australia, where he worked in a number of senior positions until 1999. He is the author of numerous publications, including The patrician and the bloke: Geoffrey Serle and the making of Australian history (2006). Thompson co-edited The Oxford book of Australian letters (1998) with Brenda Niall and edited Documents that shaped Australia: records of a nation's heritage (2010).
