Lancelot Chapman Ewbank was born in Parke County, Indiana in 1837 and by 1860 was working as a carpenter and a school teacher. During the Civil War he mustered into the 31st Indiana Volunteers in 1861 and mustered out in 1864. After the war he married, had a family, worked as a farmer, and lived in Sugar Creek, Indiana in Shelby County.
