Charles J. North was born in Chazy, Champlain County, New York, but spent the greater portion of his life in Buffalo. He was a partner in North & Vedder insurance firm, a member of patriotic societies, and the author of many poems published in periodicals and small volumes. Frank H. Severance was the longtime secretary of the Buffalo Historical Society.

Born in Mass.; graduated from Cornell University, 1879. Began work as reporter and editor of the Erie (Pa.) Gazette; moved to the Buffalo Express in 1881. Managing editor of the Illustrated Buffalo Express, 1886- 1902. Secretary and treasurer of Buffalo Historical Society, 1902-1931, and editor of vols. 4-29 of the Society's Publications. Author and lecturer on Western New York history.
