Built at Mound City, Illinois, commissioned January 16, 1862; named for Cairo, Illinois; mission was to engage Confederate gunboats on inland rivers; sunk by mine on Yazoo River near Vicksburg, December 12, 1862; discovered 1956; raised 1964; museum opened at Vicksburg Military Park, 1980; restoration completed, 1984.
